A session with Philip Sheppard

With English Session Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios london

Our first meeting each other was in Berlin during a C2 Spark event.  Image taken during 1st day rehearsals.

Over the two years I have met with Philip in Berlin, London, Montreal and Montana. Philip mixes his life with many events from producing pieces for the Olympics to Games for PlayStation, from Keynote talks and creating workshops at conferences to inventing musical games for kids.

This and the following few images were made during a session with Philip and English Session Orchestra  at Abbey Road Studios

creating work for The Final Year  (an unprecedented look at the shaping of US foreign policy. Philip collaborated with director Greg Barker and Oscar-winning producer John Battsek once again on the soundtrack for the new movie.)

Philip has been honing his craft since the age of three when his older brother was playing a violin, Philip said I want something bigger than that! and here we are, these people are just other people but people that have been honing their craft over years and a humble experience to both document and listen to the instruments, the conversations going back and forth, the progression of a score.

Finding composition in somewhere like studio 1 at Abbey Road Studios while staying in one place while the red light is on is not something I did! I had my ninja sneakers on and respected their playing while moving around to get the shots that I hope tells some of the story of the day.

The studio is empty, no sounds except me checking the camera, doors open, foot steps, people sitting down, conversations while picking up their instruments, Philip talks to the production team in the booth, musicians still chatting, instruments being tuned and checked, Philip talks, pages are turned, Philip raises hands, they start playing, two seconds later it stops, Philip talks to booth, they start again, I start to make shots while thousands of intricate movements are being made.

Thank you to Philip, his team, Abbey Road studios and English Session Orchestra for allowing me to be a part of this.

This day is done and the studio shall play another sound tomorrow.
